In August 2016, three strangers - Max, Becca, and Joel - set off on an adventure to circle the globe in a £75 car within a year. This wasn’t just a physical journey but a mental one, pushing them to face challenges far beyond what they thought possible. Over 100 people from diverse backgrounds joined them along the way, making it a collective journey of personal growth, resilience, and deep human connection. As they faced countless obstacles, breakdowns, dangerous situations, and exhausting nights, they learned to rely on each other and embrace support from newfound friends and strangers. This journey became a powerful testament to the positive impact of stepping outside one’s comfort zone on mental health, showing that vulnerability, trust, and connection are vital for personal growth. Everywhere they traveled, they found ways to give back - building an orphanage, teaching children, and more - experiences that helped redefine their mental boundaries and bring purpose to the journey. The Global Convoy emerged as a mission to promote mental well-being through adventure, encouraging people to explore, connect, and grow together, creating a supportive, connected world that values each person’s journey.
What is your interest or experience of adventure for mental health or wellbeing?
Our extreme adventure forced each of us to confront our own mental barriers, building emotional strength and teaching the profound value of mutual support - lessons that resonated with everyone who joined us along the way and that ever since, we have tried to 'bottle' and distribute to those who will benefit and have been doing so successfully for 8 years now After speaking to Belinda at RGS Explore - I learned that not only did most of our practices and methods have technical terms and science backing them, but there was a brand (Adventure Mind) who shared our goals and purpose.
How can you help us spread the word about AdventureMind’s mission?
With years of experience running adventure expeditions across over 80 countries with participants from more than 25 nationalities, we have seen firsthand how transformative adventure can be for mental well-being. Our community - though not massive in size - is highly engaged and passionate, and we’re eager to use our platform to amplify AdventureMind’s mission. Through our social media and network, we can share inspiring personal stories and testimonials, highlighting how these journeys have empowered individuals and improved their mental health. On Belinda’s recommendation, we’ll implement the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale to turn our observations into measurable data, proving what we’ve always known: that adventure offers powerful benefits for mental health. With this evidence, we hope to contribute valuable insights to Adventure Mind and support the broader adventure community in advocating for mental health improvement through exploration. Our case studies, combined with this data, can illustrate how adventure helps overcome mental struggles, enabling us to share not only stories but concrete findings that underscore AdventureMind’s mission.
