Business: Head Outside Awards
I’m an experienced Expedition Leader, Mental Health First Aid provider, and the founder of the Head Outside Awards. Born and raised in Hong Kong, I’ve lived all over the world but can now be found in Weymouth when I’m not travelling the globe. Having lived with mental illness, I’m passionate about the transformative mental health benefits of outdoor activity and adventure. My mission is to normalise conversations about mental health, break down stigma, and inspire people to live their lives more adventurously. I’m dedicated to empowering others to find healing and strength through connection with nature and each other
What is your interest or experience of adventure for mental health or wellbeing?
Adventure not only changed my life, it saved my life. At my lowest point, living with Bipolar Disorder and suicidal depression, a friend invited me on a 4,500-mile bike ride across Southeast Asia. I didn’t even own a bike, but that journey reignited something I thought I’d lost: hope, purpose, and a zest for life. It was the spark I needed to start rebuilding myself. Since then, adventure has been my sanctuary, my teacher, and my greatest source of joy. It’s helped me find healing and meaning, unlock resilience, and create a new identity that allowed me to move forward. Whether thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, trekking the length of Jordan, climbing Kilimanjaro in flip-flops, or leading expeditions in remote corners of the world, I’ve experienced the transformative power of stepping into the unknown. This inspired me to become an expedition leader to facilitate these life-changing experiences for others, particularly young people. I wanted them to feel the same sense of purpose, connection, and growth that adventure gave me. It’s also why I pioneered Mental Health First Aid in the outdoor industry and founded the Head Outside Awards. For me, adventure is more than an escape,it’s a lifeline.
How can you help us spread the word about AdventureMind’s mission?
I’m passionate about the transformative power of adventure and how it improves mental health, which is why I’d love to support AdventureMind as an ambassador. Through the Head Outside Awards, I’m already sharing stories of individuals and organizations using the outdoors to improve well-being, which aligns perfectly with AdventureMind’s mission.
As a Mental Health First Aid instructor and expedition leader, I’m always working to equip others with the tools to support mental health in adventurous settings. I’d use my platform to share AdventureMind’s research, case studies, and success stories, sparking meaningful conversations about the connection between adventure and mental well-being. Whether through social media, talks, or events, I’m committed to helping normalise mental health conversations and inspiring others to explore the outdoors as a way to find healing, resilience, and connection. AdventureMind’s work is vital, and I’m ready to help amplify its impact far and wide.
